When I got invited onto ABC Radio to have a Conversation, it was one of the most exciting moments of my career.
Richard Fidler is one of my favourite conversationalists, and it was a small dream of mine to one day have something interesting enough to talk to him about. It was a really good time, in the wake of the Under the Lino book launch, to get the phone call from a producer of this popular national ABC show.
The UTL Project is super easy for me to talk about, so I wasn’t worried about the content. The producer and I spent a few hours speaking on the telephone, while she made sure I had a story to tell and wouldn’t drop too many inappropriate words! What surprised me most was that she also wanted to talk about the ‘other’ side of my life. Not just the project. They wanted to know about me and what made me tick. That was going to be more challenging. I decided that I should just be honest and myself, and answer the questions as they were asked… not too much thinking, straight from the heart.

Meeting Sarah Percy was a surprise, because she wasn’t one of the usual presenters. Sarah is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Queensland, which daunted me somewhat, because of my lack of political know-how, and fear of intellectuals! I needn’t have worried… she is delightful, and easy to talk with being a parent of young children, as well, of course, having several mutual acquaintances – Brisbane is indeed a small place. We had such a wonderful hour together – her first ABC Conversations interview, and mine. A good bonding experience for us both!

The Conversations interview was aired on the Australia Day public holiday 2019, and not a lot of Queensland listeners managed to hear it because of a daylight savings glitch. The ABC has chosen not to podcast it for reasons not shared with me, and the episode was only played on Radio National once. Fortunately, because of the glitch, the ABC has apologised and given me the recording to share with you all on my personal networks.
So without further ado… here it is! Grab a cuppa tea, click the following link and enjoy the interview, with my love

Thanks for emailing me the link to your radio interview Caylie, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Bobbie
Thank you for taking the time to do so Bobbie xxx
This was an extremely interesting conversation.
Your personal story was very compelling. It is so interesting to hear someone share how they had the courage to move from dreaming to action.
Thank you Kate, and I am so happy to hear that you got that message from the interview. It’s so important to me that people can see that ordinary people are doing all sorts of wonderful things, with the help of others in the community… team work at its finest xxx
Thanks, Caylie, for sending the Toowong and District Historical Society Inc. the link to your interview with Sarah Percy of the ABC Radio on 30 January 2019.
A great listen.
Your story of finding monies under the lino while renovating your house has been a compelling story with lots of twists and turns. (As a sleuth exercise, it is better than an Agatha Christie who dunnit!).
We thank you for taking out time to share this story with our members as our guest speaker on several occasions over the past 2 or so years, and we have all enjoyed being part of the journey.
Brisbane is the richer for your efforts. Congratulations to Caylie!
We will post the link you sent us on our Facebook page.
Look forward to the next happening in the Under the Lino saga.
All the best from the members of the Toowong and District Historical Society Inc. [http://toowonghistory.org.au/]
Dear Leigh, It’s always such a pleasure to spend time with my alma mater historical group! I loved sharing the story with you guys – the enthusiasm was huge! Sadly, the tram is not to be, from Melbourne, that is, in favour of a restored Brisbane tram! Peter Matic is working with the Tramways Museum looking into getting a Brisbane tram to Paddington. Fun times ahead! Love to you all, Caylie
